MIT Study: Humanoid Adoption Creates 1.6 Jobs for Every 1 Displaced

MIT Sloan and the Brookings Institution co-published a longitudinal study on June 22 tracking 41 humanoid deployment sites over 18 months. The headline finding: every humanoid robot placed in production displaced 0.6 direct labor roles but created 1.6 new roles, mostly in robot supervision, integration, and adjacent throughput expansion.

However, the report also highlights a substantial skills mismatch: 73% of newly created roles require post-secondary technical training that displaced workers do not currently hold. The authors argue that public policy must aggressively fund re-skilling to capture the net employment gains.

The study is the most comprehensive empirical work on humanoid labor impacts to date and is expected to inform both the EU's AI Act implementation guidance and the US Department of Labor's workforce strategy.
