BMW to Deploy Figure 03 Humanoid for Logistics Sequencing at Spartanburg Plant
· Updated
BMW Group said on June 25, 2026 that Figure AI's third-generation humanoid, Figure 03, will start work at its Spartanburg, South Carolina plant on complex sequencing applications in logistics. The automaker framed the move as the next step after it used the earlier Figure 02 robot in the plant's body shop during 2025.
From body shop to logistics
In its press release, BMW said the Figure 02 robot supported the production of more than 30,000 BMW X3 vehicles over ten months, inserting sheet-metal parts for the welding process in the body shop. Figure AI founder and CEO Brett Adcock described the same project in the release as an 11-month deployment.
Figure 03 will take on a different job. According to BMW, the robot will pick unsorted components from larger containers and sort them into sequencing trolleys, which deliver parts just in sequence to assembly employees. The release also refers to Hall 52, where, the company said, variants of the BMW X3 and, in the future, the electrified BMW iX5 will be assembled.
"Plant Spartanburg is the birthplace of humanoid robotics in BMW Manufacturing's operational day-to-day activities," Ulrich Wieland, vice president of production control and logistics at BMW Manufacturing, said in the release. He added that BMW is "now looking forward to deploying Figure 03 for a sequencing use case in logistics."
"Our 11-month deployment of Figure 02 proved that humanoids are no longer lab experiments," Adcock said in the release. He said Figure is "excited to continue our work in Spartanburg as Figure tackles the complexity of the assembly and logistics hall."
What is new in Figure 03
BMW said Figure 03 introduces several new features for expanded applications. According to the release, these include soft components designed for enhanced safety, wireless charging designed for higher availability, audio functions for speech-to-speech communication, and improved hands with tactile sensors and palm cameras intended to increase precision and dexterity.
BMW's description places Figure 03 in logistics work that feeds the assembly line rather than in vehicle assembly itself, and the release does not describe Figure 03 performing body shop tasks like its predecessor.
What the announcement does not cover
BMW's release does not state how many Figure 03 units will be deployed, the financial terms of the arrangement or a timeline for completing the rollout. It describes the project at Spartanburg only and does not mention other BMW plants. The release says Figure 03 "will now start" at the plant, which indicates an initial deployment rather than a fleet-scale order.
