Robot AI Startup Generalist Valued at $3 Billion After 8VC-Led Extension
· Updated
Generalist, a startup building AI foundation models for robots, is now valued at $3 billion after raising additional capital led by 8VC, TechCrunch reported on August 25, 2026, citing two people with knowledge of the funding. TechCrunch said a regulatory filing shows the new capital totals nearly $200 million.
An extension of the June round
According to TechCrunch, the money extends a $400 million Series B led by Radical Ventures that Generalist announced in June at a $2 billion valuation. Generalist's own announcement, dated June 4, 2026, put that round at $400 million and said the company had raised more than $500 million in total. The company listed 8VC, Union Square Ventures, Hanabi Capital, Norwest, NVIDIA, Boldstart Ventures, Spark Capital, Bezos Expeditions and NFDG among its investors, along with angel investors including Fei-Fei Li. Generalist said it would use the money to train next-generation models, expand its physical data engine and add compute and training infrastructure.
TechCrunch reported that Generalist was founded by Pete Florence and Andy Zeng, both formerly of Google DeepMind, and Andrew Barry, formerly of Boston Dynamics. In its June post, Generalist said its earlier GEN-1 model reached 99% reliability on diverse tasks and ran up to three times faster than the prior state of the art.
GEN-1.5 and one-shot learning
The extension followed the August 19, 2026 release of GEN-1.5, which Generalist describes as a multimodal robot foundation model that takes video input and outputs action trajectories at 100 Hz. Generalist says the model can learn a new task in context from as little as 3 to 12 seconds of demonstration, without gradient updates or fine-tuning.
In Generalist's published results, GEN-1.5 averaged 59% success with one-shot prompting across 10 manipulation tasks, and 83% after 10 gradient steps on 5 minutes of data per task. The company says the model was pretrained for more than eight months on physical interaction data gathered in homes, warehouses and factories, and that the pretraining data contains no simulation data. These figures are the company's own.
A crowded field of robot model developers
TechCrunch placed the deal among several large bets on general-purpose robot models. It noted that Physical Intelligence is reportedly valued at $11 billion, that SoftBank-backed Skild AI is valued at $14 billion, and that Genesis AI was in talks to raise capital at a $3 billion valuation.
Physical Intelligence's figure stems from reports in March. Bloomberg reported on March 27, 2026, citing people familiar with the matter, that the company was in talks to raise about $1 billion at a valuation of more than $11 billion, after a $600 million round at a $5.6 billion valuation.
